CFP: 11th Annual South Asia Legal Studies Workshop– Madison, WI

University of Wisconsin Law School

University of Wisconsin School of Law‘s Global Legal Studies Center invites panel proposals for its 11th Annual pre-conference South Asia Legal Studies Workshop on Oct. 26, 2017. Submissions should be made to mitra.sharfi[at]wisc.edu and sumudu.atapattu[@]wisc.edu by Apr. 14, 2017.

We understand “law” in its broadest sense to encompass not only state law, but also norms emanating from non-state sources and actors. “Law” may therefore describe customary, religious and international normative orders, as much as rules produced by government institutions. We welcome panel proposals featuring speakers based in different countries, and from a diverse array of disciplines and career paths, including law, the social sciences, humanities, business, medicine and the sciences. In previous years, panel themes have included: colonial legacies in post-colonial contexts; courts; corruption; cultural accommodation and legal pluralism; economic policy and property rights; digitization and social media in research; environmental legal questions; free speech and public space; gender and sexuality; health; human rights; Indian legal education; the Indian Supreme Court; legal liberalism and Islam; micro-practices of law; natural resource use and regulation; the Pakistani lawyers’ movement; religion and the personal law system; the rule of law in Afghanistan; and South Asian diasporas and law. Panels on issues of timely interest and concern have been particularly well received at past workshops. Priority will be given to panels that feature speakers at different institutions and stages of their careers, and who have not spoken at previous pre-conference workshops.
