Women in Modern Central Asia — Graz, Austria

Russian East-European Eurasian Studies (REEES) Centre at the University of Graz (Graz, Austria) is hosting the First International Conference “Women in Modern Central Asia”, Nov. 6-7, 2012. The call for papers deadline is Sept. 1, 2012.

Background:

The goal of the conference is to create a forum of exchange between young scholars and practitioners from NGOs and International Organizations. Renowned keynote speakers, such as the former President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Mme Rosa Otunbayeva, will share their experience and bring encouragement to a new generation of scholars who work on gender issues and their effect on the socio-economic development of Central Asia. The conference will solicit papers from social sciences and law, approaching the issue of the lives of women in Central Asia from a multi-disciplinary perspective. The first conference of this sort will be designed to take stock of developments following 20 years of independence, further conferences will translate the into action, particularly in the legislative arena.

Call for Papers:

We are pleased to call for papers addressing the topic of the conference by inviting a broad range of participation of scholars and young researchers on the following key issues:

•    Trafficking in Women
•    Domestic Violence
•    Effects of Migration
•    Women in the Labour Market
•    Women in Politics and the Work Place
•    Demography and Women’s Rights
•    Influence of Religion
•    Women and Security

The deadline for the submission of abstracts (500 words maximum) is 1 September 2012. All ab-stracts must be emailed (along with CV and letter of motivation) to reees@uni-graz.at.

Scholarships:

There are limited funds available to cover travel costs and accommodation. For applicants from Central Asia, a separate line of support will be established by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
