REFLECTING ON JUSTICE O’CONNOR’S JURISPRUDENCE RELATING
TO RACE AND EDUCATION

INVITATION:

The Catholic University Law Review invites you to submit a
proposal for our Spring 2008 Symposium, entitled “A Tribute
to Justice Sandra Day O’Connor: Reflecting on Justice
O’Connor’s Jurisprudence Relating to Race and Education.”
This event will be held on February 22, 2008, in the Walter
A. Slowinski Courtroom at The Catholic University of
America, Columbus School of Law, in Washington, D.C.

THEMES:

In recognition of Justice O’Connor’s contribution to the
area of race and education, the Symposium will focus on the
following themes:

– An Academic Perspective: How Justice O’Connor’s Presence
on the Supreme Court Altered the Treatment of Race in
Education Law (with a particular focus on the cases:
Wygant v. Jackson Board of Education, City of Richmond v.
J.A. Croson, Grutter v. Bolliger, and Gratz v. Bollinger)
– A Practitioner’s Perspective: Issues that Arise in the
Litigation of Cases Involving Matters of Race and
Education (with a preference for papers that incorporate
Justice O’Connor’s Jurisprudence)
– Moving Forward: The Potential Effect of Parents Involved
in Community Schools v. Seattle School District and
Meredith v. Jefferson County Board of Education on Gratz
v. Bollinger and Grutter v. Bolliger

PAPER REQUIREMENTS:

Papers should address one of the three themes mentioned
above. Papers must not be previously published or accepted
for publication.

DEADLINES:

– October 5, 2007: All topics must be received
electronically by 5:00 p.m. E.S.T.
– October 22, 2007: Authors will be contacted concerning
selection decisions
– February 8, 2008: Final papers must be received
electronically by 5:00 p.m. E.S.T.
